The aim of my research work was to study the interaction of charged particles with materials undergoing phase transition. To measure the Energy Loss of 25 MeV protons in ferroelectric target as a function of temperature of the material medium, I have used the Pelletron accelerator facility at Inter University Accelerator Center New Delhi India. To study the Energy Loss of 6 MeV electrons in ferroelectrics targets a Microtron facility at Pune University, India, was used. The energy loss of protons in ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BT) single crystals have shown anomalous at and around Curie temperature. Whereas the energy loss of 6 MeV electron in BT is also anomalous at Tc. This results an indicative of a "new mode" of energy loss at and around the phase transition. The new mode of energy loss at phase transition is not mentioned in the standard theory of stopping power.
Hence, further study on the interaction of heavy ions in other materials that are undergoing phase transition such as Superconductors, ferroelectrics polymers and in nanomaterials gives an extensive data to frame a comprehensive theory of stopping power. The experimental result will be helpful to design a light weighted radiation shielding. The cryogenic treated ferroelectrics materials is an other interesting work which will provide a better tool to tune the stopping power of cosmic rays. This area of research will be of great interest to engineer the materials for radiation shielding or in any required fields.
